James McDougall is an associate professor of American Studies at the Center for Global Studies, Shantou University in the ChaoShan region of Guangdong Province, China, where he teaches courses in American Studies, Global Studies, film, and literature, including courses on the Beat Generation. His current research examines the ways in which Beat writers actively struggled to redefine the “sovereignty of the poet”; this research includes studies of Beat Generation ecopoetics, aesthetic experimentation, political writing, public performance, orientalism, and community formation.
