Joe Provenzano (b. 1995) is a poet, publisher, and independent scholar. His fields of inquiry encompass the “Beat,” “New York,” and “Black Mountain” traditions, with special emphasis on the life and work of Ed Sanders, the Mimeograph/Small Press Revolution, and the educational innovations of Black Mountain College.
In July of 2016 Provenzano joined Arthur S. Nusbaum’s Third Mind Books as Assistant Curator—working alongside Nusbaum in handling curatorial duties. Provenzano is also the photographer and social media coordinator for Third Mind Books. Provenzano and Nusbaum collaborated on Nusbaum’s 2017 Presentation at the Paris Interzone Conference, titled “The Thomas Rain Crowe Collection: Beat Mentors and Their Progeny,” and will make his in-print debut as a contributing scholar to the forthcoming Third Mind Books publication on the same subject.
Following the example of Sanders and others, In May of 2017 Provenzano—with his cousin and fellow poet, Mike Benoit—launched Melting Watch Press, an independent publishing house vocationally fortified by its founders’ mutually-exacting inquiry into Beat-&-Beyond literary scholarship. An interview of Provenzano and Benoit on their press can be found here, and one can click the following for a link to their debut publication, Chattering of the Subconscious Toybox: A Radical Anthology of Emerging New Poets.
Provenzano welcomes correspondence with his consanguineous colleagues in the Beat-&-Beyond community, and plans to contribute original work in poetry, prose, and literary scholarship for many years to come.
