Allen Tobias was born in New York City in 1943, and attended public schools in Brooklyn. He entered Columbia College in 1960, majoring in English Literature, studying under Angus Fletcher, Meyer Schapiro, Robert Brustein, Steven Marcus and others.

He became secretary to Allen Ginsberg in 1966. More recently, he’s written and presented on the Beats at Columbia, at NYU on two occasions, at U Mass, Lowell, and at the Roosevelt Study Center, Middelburg, The Netherlands, in both 1999 and 2012. Also, Allen produced a major exhibition, “The Lion For Real, Allen Ginsberg at Columbia” in 2002-2003. He continues to read, write, study and collect and writes on art for Examiner.com. He remains devoted both to scholarly and to creative pursuits.
