Carmen M. Méndez-García is Associate Professor of American Studies at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), and the coordinator of a new MA in American Studies at Universidad Complutense/Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. She has been doing research on the Beat Generation since she started working on her dissertation, defended in 2003. Currently interested in the Beat Generation as both precursors and actors in the 60s Counterculture(s), she has published and presented internationally on Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg, and Beat women writers from a gender perspective.

Carmen has also for more than a decade lectured on these topics both at an undergrad and graduate level, and advised several master’s thesis and dissertations dealing with the Beats. She is currently working on a monograph on Spaces and the Counterculture(s), analyzing fiction by the Beats and their influence in the definition of new countercultural spaces.
