Ceren Sengezer is a PhD candidate in the American and Canadian Studies Department at the University of Birmingham, UK. Her original research concerns a fundamental reassessment of the profile of the Beats’ debts to their literary forbears by shedding light on how they likened themselves to Shakespeare. Her thesis examines how the Beat writers interpreted Shakespeare and how they drew the playwright and his work into their writings, discussions and correspondences.
In support of her research, Sengezer was awarded a “Graduate (Alumni) Travel Fund” and a “Nellie Waterson Travel Scholarship” by the University of Birmingham in 2010 to research archival materials related to the Beat writers at Harvard University, Columbia University, and the New York Public Library. She is co-editor of Jack Kerouac’s timeline with Professor Dick Ellis for the “Literary Encyclopedia” and has presented papers on her research at University of Birmingham and University of Oxford.
