David Slattery has just graduated with a first class honours B.A. degree from Mary Immaculate college, majoring in English Language and Literature. The title of his final year project was ‘Jack Kerouac: The pursuit of a Spiritual Light in Social Darkness’. He is interested in modern American literature, particularly the Beat Movement and its European connections; the romantic poets, the French symbolists and especially Irish writers such as Kavanagh, Kennelly and Roddy Doyle. David has just started his MA and is researching the conflict between social and religious identity in the work of Jack Kerouac.  He has also recently been nominated by the head of the department for a studentship award.  He enjoys creative writing and has recently sent a short story and a poem to a Galway literary magazine to be considered for publication.
