Dr Eva Kowalska teaches English and Critical Thinking at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Her interest in the Beats started with Kerouac, and has since developed into an avenue of
academic research. Her postgraduate work included research on Jack Kerouac, Sinclair
Beiles, William Burroughs and Alex Trocchi, as well as several of the Beat poets in the
framework of drug literature. She has written peer-reviewed articles on Beiles, Burroughs and Trocchi. During her PhD studies and Post-Doctoral Fellowship she taught a Beat poetry elective for third-year students in the English Department at Wits University.
In addition to Beat literature, her other research interests include small print journals and
transnational modernisms, obscure South African poets and drug literature, specifically the autobiographical opiate novel.
