Eva Kowalska teaches EAP, writing and critical thinking to students of the Built Environment at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Her interest in the Beats started with Kerouac, and has since developed into an avenue of academic research. Her postgraduate work included research on Jack Kerouac, Sinclair Beiles, William Burroughs and Alex Trocchi, as well as several of the Beat poets in the framework of drug literature. She has published peer-reviewed articles on Beiles, Burroughs and Trocchi as well as on the South African artist and poet Wopko Jensma.
In addition to Beat literature, her other research interests include small print journals and transnational modernism, obscure South African poets and drug literature, specifically the autobiographical opiate novel.
