Mark LeVine is a professor of modern Middle Eastern history and culture at UC Irvine, a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University, and a senior columnist with al-Jazeera English. He is the author and editor of almost a dozen books, including most recently Heavy Metal Islam (Random House), Impossible Peace: Israel/Palestine since 1989 (Zed Books), One Land, Two States, ISrael and Palestine as Parallel States (UC Press) and Heavy Metal: Controversies and Counterculture (Equinox Books), producer of Flowers in the Desert (EMI 2009) and of the award-winning documentary Before the Spring, After the Fall, and performed and arranged on the Grammy winning Street Signs by Ozomatli (Concord Records).
