Melanie Eis is a doctoral candidate at the Graduate School of North American Studies at Freie Universität in Berlin. She is currently working on her thesis about the representation of race and gender in Beat Generation literature. Her reevaluation focuses on white masculine identity in the now canonized literary texts by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs, and also intends to include less known writers, such as Diane di Prima and Bob Kaufman.
