I am now an independent scholar (a 65 year-old retired associate professor at the University of Montpellier, France). My interest in the Beats goes back a very long way. My Beat ‘credentials’ are a dictionary entry on Peter Orlovsky back in the 1980s, an article on Lew Welch, one partly on Philip Whalen, teaching The Beat Book at the University of Iowa 7 years ago. Iowa is where I met Chuck Miller, dubbed by some poet friends of his “the Last of the Beats.” I and a friend, Walter Gruenzweig, a professor at TU-Dortmund, Germany, translated some poems of his in our respective languages and published our translations in a trilingual book, with an equally trilingual substantial postscript.
