I’m the author of Herbert Huncke: The Times Square Hustler Who Inspired Jack Kerouac (Schaffner Books) and the Beat Generation (titled American Hipster in the first edition published by Magnus Books) and coeditor, with Robert Holton, of What’s Your Road, Man? Critical Essays on Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (Southern Illinois UP). I was the founding director of the Jack and Stella Kerouac Conference on Beat Literature at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and taught the Beats for many years at UMass Lowell and later at James Madison University. More recently, I published The Power of Adrienne Rich: A Biography and am currently researching a biography of the poet Louise Glück.. I live in Orange County, Virginia.
