Margarida Martins is an Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon in the Department of English Studies. She has a PhD in Literature and Cultural Studies (2016) from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon with a thesis on Postcolonial Literature and Culture in India, and an MA in American Literature and Culture from Keele University, UK. She is also a researcher at ULICES (University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies) and her research interests include postcolonial literatures and cultures, mainly the Indian subcontinent, decolonisation of English literature, diaspora and migration. However, finding herself at a crossroad in her research path she is now turning to post-humanism, the body, non-human agents and interconnectedness.
The Beats have been a constant presence in Margarida’s life and personal interests, even though not explored academically (besides her MA dissertation on William Burroughs). However, Ginsberg’s centenary and a recent symposium at the University of Lisbon awakened a renewed interest on the Beats.
