Michael has a BA in Russian from San Francisco State University and an MA in Humanities also from SFSU. He is currently finishing his PhD at Tallinn University, which involves study of urban landscapes and their meanings, especially in Kaliningrad, Russian Federation. His thesis also looks at Jack Kerouac’s urban and rural wanderings and busking culture. Michael has taught humanities and English literature at San Francisco State University, Tallinn University and the Estonian Academy of Art. He has contributed to the Christian Science Monitor, the Guardian, the Financial Times, Vice and many others. He is the co-editor of Tallinn Arts magazine (Estonia) and Kapital magazine (Denmark).
