Organizers Sanna Toivanen (Finland) and Alba Cabrera (Spain) present an evening of Beatness:
Where were the women of the Beat Generation? Bodily Portraits of Minor Characters is a combination of literary texts, poetry and physical theater that reflects on the life of two members of the Beat Generation: the poet Diane di Prima and the writer Joyce Johnson. Bodily portraits of them, their lives and the movement.
We are taken back to New York City in the 1950s, jazz and bebop music playing and people reciting poetry aloud. In the shadows we can find the minor characters, the women: out of focus, on the sidelines, blurred, working underground, unpopularized. Nomadic travelers, moving at their own pace, their own beat; also travelling within, in more intimate and familiar environments, integrating them into their poetry and writings. They are the ones who maintain the Beat style and way of thinking over the years; witnesses of an era, but also surpassing that era and bringing it into the present day. Thanks to them, literary topics are broadly extended to areas rooted in gender and visited from a female perspective.
Women are the true essence of Beat:
RAW, UNEDITED, PURE, SHOCKING.
