CUT-UPS@2023 programme

The University of Chicago Center in Paris

12-15 September 2023

CUT-UPS@2023 is the post-Covid version of CUT-UPS@60, an EBSN Special Conference that was scheduled to happen in 2020 to mark the 60th anniversary of the first publications to use the cut-up methods initiated by William Burroughs and Brion Gysin at the Beat Hotel in Paris.

Due to the limited venue capacity and the large number of participants, unfortunately there will be no open online registration for CUT-UPS@2023 and no registration on the day. We will post reports and photos and hopefully videos of the conference on the website.

CUT-UPS@2023 is being sponsored by the Beat publishers MOLOKO PRINT, based in Schönebeck, Germany, and Third Mind Books, based in Ann Arbor (Michigan), USA. Their titles are available for sale on their websites. EBSN would like to thank them for their generous support.

CUT-UPS@2023 Paris is being generously supported by The University of Chicago Center in Paris.

CUT-UPS@2023 is being generously supported by The David Bruce Centre for American Studies at Keele University, and by CY Héritages, CY Advanced Studies, and CY Langues et Études Internationales at Cergy Paris Université.

CUT ART LINES

Exhibition and Multimedia Presentation of Beat Generation and Contemporary Cut-up Art

Cut image lines – cut music lines – cut online lines of communication… The cut-up is a potent tool for creation in a wide range of artistic mediums. For the duration of the CUT-UPS@23 conference, attendees can explore a selection of works by artists ranging from the original Beats to contemporary cut-up practitioners from around the world. Are these images, objects, recordings and digital applications just aesthetic diversions, or are they veritable vessels of subversion and satori? Beyond blurred, the lines are cut.

Featuring largely unseen works by artists including Terry Wilson, Claude Pelieu, William Burroughs, Barry Miles, Harold Chapman, Marilyn Stablein, Andreas Klein, Kriegfried, Florian Carro, Bryan Mulvihill, Fanny Garnichet and Marc Olmsted.
